Jailbreak Apple TV 2 (6.2.1) – No Apple TV 3 Support!

Do you have an Apple TV 2 running 6.2.1 (iOS 7.1.2) firmware? If the answer is yes, then you’ll be pleased to know that you can now jailbreak for free using FireCore’s SeasOnpass tool. This jailbreak is limited to tethered boot only for the latest firmware, unfortunately, meaning that every time your Apple TV reboots you will have to boot your Apple TV 2nd-gen into tethered mode.

  • This beta is available for Mac only;
  • This version defaults to 5.3 (untethered) and you can install 6.2.1 (tethered) by right-clicking the Create IPSW button;
  • The 6.2.1 jailbreak is tethered (for now) so please ensure you know what that means before using this;

Apple has closed the jailbreaking doors permanently since the release of its Apple TV 3. Yet, two generations later there is still no jailbreak available for any Apple TV model following the above mentioned iteration. Of course the Apple TV 2 was a different story because the set-top box has been jailbroken many times. Actually, the Apple TV 2 has always been jailbroken. A beta update has been released to SeasOnpass by FireCore; working with Apple TV 2 firmware 6.2.1 (iOS 7.1.2) and OS X EI Capitan.

It’s thanks to many familiar names in the jailbreaking world that this particular launch has been made possible. @iH8SnOw and @Pod2g are both credited with working on this latest version of SeasOnpass. And we can’t forget former Chronic Dev team member @POsixninja; and @Nitotv who has personally dedicated a lot of his time over the past years playing a cat-and-mouse game with Apple over the Apple TV.

It’s interesting to note that the FireCore crew posted an update to the SeasOnpass tool on GitHub; completely bypassing their blog which houses all their previous jailbreak data.
