We’re not really expecting to see a jailbreak for the Apple TV 3, but we have high expectations for a jailbreak solution for Apple TV 4 – and already made its first appearance.
Apple’s new TV was released back in October; after it was announced during Apple’s iPhone 6S event in September. We’re not surprised to see that the set-top box is a massive overhaul of the Apple TV 3, coming with a brand-new remote with a built-in glass track-pad and an all-new user interface.
In addition, the new device costs $50 more than the new Apple TV used to cost, but that was predictable with all the added features, particularly the ability to play video games on the box and the third-party app support.
But the one thing that Apple TV users are patiently waiting on is the jailbreak for Apple TV 4 model, which runs an operating system known as tvOS. This operating system contains much of the same code as iOS for the Apple TV 3; and we assume it includes a heap of new code that jailbreak developers will have to wade their way through to find a security hole.
We’re hearing rumors that this may have already occurred, because one well-known jailbreak developer is teasing the possibility of what (we hope) may be a jailbreak for Apple TV 4.
Stefan Esser (aka @iOn1c) recently posted on Twitter a photo of his new Apple TV home screen – see below – showing a successfully installed version of OpenSSH, together with some other Apple TV 4 apps.
Now most of you will know that OpenSSH is an app that secures Internet connections on devices on which it’s been installed, and it’s only available via Cydia on Apple devices that have been jailbroken. And because Cydia is not available on Apple’s new TV, it does appear that in this particular instance OpenSSH was side-loaded onto the Apple TV.

Unfortunately, we don’t believe that Esser will release the Apple TV 4 jailbreak he’s discovered because it’s been quite a while since he’s released anything jailbreak-relate; even when he has discovered new exploits.
But, the good news is that another jailbreak developer who’s shown interest in jailbreaking Apple’s new TV has offered some insight into the possibility of jailbreaking the Apple TV 4.
Kevin Bradley (@nitoTV – and the developer of the nitoTV jailbreak app, which incidentally was one of the original Apple TV jailbreak apps to be released years ago) stated that he’s confident there will be a jailbreak release for Apple’s new TV, but that he’s not sure when that will happen.
@craig_lloyd much more cobfident we will see one than I was for ATV3

Interestingly, Bradley hasn’t commented on whether he’s working on a jailbreak for the Apple TV 4 himself, or not, but it wouldn’t surprise us to hear that he’s at least trying to come up with something.
What we do know, though, is that a jailbreak for Apple TV 4 would be absolutely huge, meaning that it would completely change how the Apple TV is used. And just think how much more you could do with a jailbreak, particularly with gaming and third party app support. And how cool would it be to have jailbreak tweaks for Siri on the Apple TV 4.
And that’s not all; it would be fabulous to be able to use other Bluetooth controllers like the PS 4 controller. There are just so many things we’d love to see in a jailbreak for the Apple TV 4, but of course we’ll have to wait for the release of a jailbreak. We just hope this comes sooner rather than later.
